When I first decided that I wanted to have my own blog, I had so many questions! I googled a lot of what I needed to know, but not being techy, I didn’t understand half of what I read. That led to overwhelm, and procrastination.
In this post, I’m going to give you 5 easy steps that will help you get your blog started. You can easily get all five of these accomplished in an afternoon.
So, grab a cup of coffee (or beverage of your choice) and lets get started!
Pick a Topic
When I say pick a topic, I mean pick something you want to start writing about. Something you can chat about for hours and never get bored. Or pick something you want to teach someone. Maybe you are a crating ninja, you could easily start a crafting blog. Is cooking more your jam? Pick that topic.
Whatever you choose, I would just encourage you to have at least a moderate curiosity about. It will keep you interested and wanting to keep creating content.
I’ll talk about your ideal reader avatar in another post (hint: your ideal reader is just like you!), but let’s keep it simple today.
Have you picked your topic? Ok, this is what to do next:
Choose a Name/Set up Hosting
You have to pick a name for your blog and you have to decide on your hosting options. There are a lot of different options when it comes to hosting, but I really love and recommend Bluehost. When you sign up with Blue hosting, you are given a free year on your domain registered name. Not everyone does that.
When you choose your name, you can type in what you want, and if no one else has registered the same name, you are good to go! I know that choosing a .com is still the most popular, but don’t think you have to stick with that. Just make it easy for your readers to type in. I also wouldn’t have more than 3 words in my name. But you do you. That’s the name of the game.
Pick a Theme
Once you have your hosting and domain name setup, installed WordPress (Bluehost helps you do that too!), it’s time to pick a theme. This is where you can decide what you want your blog to look like. And this is what stops a lot of people in their tracks. Don’t let that be you. Just pick a free theme to get started. One of my most favorite free themes is Kale because it’s super clean. Check it out.
The one thing I will say when picking a theme is that you want to make sure that it’s readable on a mobile device. This is something I wished I had thought of at first.
Set up only the Important Things Now
After you pick your theme, spend a little bit of time setting up the important things. Once you are up and running, you can make things pretty, but for now, make sure that you have a way to start capturing new subscribers. I use and love Convert Kit for this. It’s a simple yet amazingly robust program that helps you communicate with your subscribers, set up opt-ins, and have that all in one place. You have a free 30 day trial with Convert Kit, so give them a try.
Make an About Me page, and also a contact page. You can spruce the up later, so don’t worry if they aren’t perfect.
Now comes the fun part!! Start creating your content! It really is that simple to get started. And the best part is that your blog is your little slice of the internet.
When you have about 10 posts up on your blog, then you can start focusing on growing your audience. The reason you want to have 10 posts on your blog is to give potential new readers a glimpse into what you are blogging about.
Don’t worry about trying to make everything perfect. You can always go back and change up your posts, make them SEO friendly, add photos, or swap out the photos you already posted.
Here’s a sweet little checklist I’ve created to help you get your blog set up in less than an afternoon!
I want to see what you are creating! Let me see by leaving a link to your blog in the comments. And know that I’m excited for you!
